Hamas Defies UN: “Will Not Disarm” Under New Gaza Resolution

by admin477351

Hamas has issued a direct challenge to the United Nations Security Council, declaring it “will not disarm” following the adoption of a US-drafted resolution on Monday. The resolution, which passed without the support of Russia and China, authorizes an “international stabilization force” (ISF) to enter Gaza and oversee its complete demilitarization. Hamas’s defiant statement rejects the resolution as an “international guardianship” and sets the stage for a potential confrontation with the new international body.
The US-led resolution endorses President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan, designed to end the two-year war. Its core components are the ISF, tasked with decommissioning weapons and destroying military infrastructure, and a “Board of Peace.” This transitional authority, which the text states will be chaired by President Trump, is meant to oversee Gaza’s reconstruction and economic recovery. The UN vote is considered essential for legitimizing these bodies and recruiting international participation.
The US ambassador, Mike Waltz, lauded the plan as a “possible pathway for Palestinian self-determination” that “dismantles Hamas’ grip.” He painted a picture of a future Gaza that is “prosperous and secure,” where “rockets will give way to olive branches.” President Trump also celebrated the vote as a “moment of true Historic proportion,” promising more announcements about his “Board of Peace” in the coming weeks.
This optimism is not shared by all permanent members of the council. Russia and China abstained, citing the resolution’s failure to provide a clear role for the UN. Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya warned that the council was effectively blessing a US initiative “on the basis of Washington’s promises” and giving “complete control” to the new, untested US-led bodies.
This diplomatic rift is mirrored on the ground. While Hamas rejects the resolution, its rival, the Palestinian Authority, has welcomed it and stands “ready to take part in its implementation.” Diplomats suggest this PA endorsement was the key factor in preventing a Russian veto. Meanwhile, the resolution’s mention of a “pathway to… statehood” has caused friction in Israel, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu restating his opposition to such an outcome, further complicating the plan’s precarious position.
