Meta has pulled off a significant talent acquisition by hiring Alan Dye, who has been Apple’s head of user interface design since 2015. Dye’s nearly 20-year career at Apple has seen him influence countless products and establish design standards that have become industry benchmarks. He will join Meta on December 31st to lead a newly established creative studio.
Mark Zuckerberg announced the hiring on Threads, detailing his vision for a creative studio within Reality Labs that merges design, fashion, and technology. Apple confirmed Dye’s departure, with CEO Tim Cook naming veteran designer Stephen Lemay as his successor. This represents a significant shift in Apple’s creative leadership structure.
The new studio will focus on elevating design across Meta’s entire product ecosystem. Zuckerberg emphasized that the company is assembling a team with exceptional skills in craft, creative vision, and systems thinking. The objective is to create iconic products that bridge hardware and software while delivering thoughtful and intuitive user experiences.
Zuckerberg painted a picture of an emerging era dominated by AI glasses and other innovative devices that will transform connectivity. He stressed that the new studio under Dye’s leadership will be responsible for ensuring that these products are not only technologically advanced but also beautifully designed. Dye will report directly to Andrew Bosworth, Meta’s Chief Technology Officer, underscoring the strategic importance of design in Meta’s future plans and its ambition to compete with the best in the industry.
