President Donald Trump has “terminated” all trade negotiations with Canada, citing a “fraudulent” ad from the province of Ontario that featured Ronald Reagan .
In a post on truth social, Trump called the ad “fake” and accused Canada of “egregious behavior.” He claimed the ad was designed to interfere with US supreme court hearings on his global tariffs.
The ad was launched by Ontario premier Doug Ford, whose province is suffering under the 35% US tariffs. It uses a clip from Reagan’s 1987 radio address where he warns that “trade barriers hurt every American worker.”
The move to suspend talks was confirmed by secretary of state Marco Rubio. This creates new uncertainty for the c$3.6 billion daily trade relationship between the two neighboring countries.
The ad has also been criticized by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation, which stated that the “selective audio” misrepresents the full speech and that the foundation is “reviewing its legal options.”
