President Xi Jinping stated that the new one-year trade deal with the US should provide “peace of mind” to China, the US, and the rest of the world. He urged diplomatic teams to complete follow-up work as soon as possible.
Xi’s remarks came during a speech at the APEC forum in Gyeongju, South Korea, on Friday. He advocated for safeguarding multilateral trade and warned against “breaking supply chains,” urging nations to “join hands.”
The deal, struck a day earlier with President Donald Trump, involves the US slashing some tariffs and export controls. This marks a significant de-escalation in the economic dispute.
In exchange, China agreed to buy US soybeans and to pause any new curbs on the export of rare earths. This concession on rare earths was critical, as Trump had threatened a 100% import tax.
The US also agreed to postpone a new, restrictive technology measure for one year. Trump called the meeting “amazing,” and both leaders announced plans for mutual state visits in the coming year.
