In a significant political development, Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok engaged in discussions with a delegation from the Venice Commission at Sándor Palace to address constitutional concerns that have surfaced following Hungary’s recent elections. The meeting was aimed at tackling the ongoing constitutional disputes affecting the nation’s public institutions.
The delegation from the Venice Commission, an advisory body on constitutional law under the Council of Europe, comprised President Marta Cartabia, Director and Secretary Simona Granata-Menghini, and Christoph Grabenwarter, a member from Austria. Their discussions centered on the challenges Hungary is facing in maintaining its constitutional integrity while adhering to European standards.
Earlier in May, President Sulyok had formally sought the expertise of the Venice Commission to navigate these constitutional challenges. He emphasized the need for guidance that aligns with European constitutional principles. Responding to this request, the Commission has prioritized the examination of the issues and initiated consultations in Budapest to gather comprehensive insights.
The involvement of the Venice Commission has been positively received by the Presidential Office, which expressed optimism that the Commission’s recommendations would play a crucial role in safeguarding Hungary’s constitutional framework. The Office highlighted its confidence that these expert insights would ensure the country’s compliance with European norms and preserve its constitutional order.
