Ukraine has reportedly executed one of its most extensive drone offensives against Russia since the onset of the conflict, resulting in at least six fatalities and igniting a significant fire at a distribution warehouse close to Moscow. Russian officials stated that their defense forces intercepted 1,478 Ukrainian drones over a span of 24 hours, marking the highest count recorded in a single day, although these figures remain unverified independently. In the Moscow region alone, around 600 drones were claimed to have been targeted, with 201 said to have been destroyed, according to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin. Tragically, the assault led to one casualty in the area.
The drone attacks have caused a massive blaze at a Wildberries distribution center near Podolsk, approximately 25 miles south of Moscow’s core. This facility, sprawling over 250,000 square meters, suffered extensive damage and was rendered inoperative, as per Ukraine’s military reports. Ukrainian forces have increasingly employed long-range drones to strike Russian military and economic installations far from the front lines. Officials in Ukraine have accused several facilities associated with Wildberries of being involved in military logistics, thereby justifying their targeting.
This escalation underscores Ukraine’s advancing capabilities in long-range strikes, as Russia persists in its reliance on drones and missiles to assault Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. Meanwhile, Russian offensives have claimed at least seven lives in Ukraine, with casualties reported in Kryvyi Rih and the Sumy region. A missile attack on Kyiv left six people injured and sparked fires, including at a prominent book market where numerous businesses reportedly lost their entire inventory.
Amidst these developments, a Spanish fighter jet, engaged in a NATO patrol, reportedly shot down a suspected Russian drone after it breached Romanian airspace, according to NATO officials. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of persistently targeting civilian infrastructure, highlighting that Moscow launched more than 1,550 attack drones, nearly 1,560 guided bombs, and 62 missiles against Ukraine in the past week alone. This intensification of hostilities comes as both nations expand their deployment of long-range weaponry, thereby heightening the risk of casualties and destruction far from the active battle zones.
