Hungary achieved remarkable success at the U20 World Wrestling Championships held in Bratislava, securing three medals in the Greco-Roman category. László Koppány emerged as a standout performer, earning a silver medal in the 130kg weight division. His journey to the final included impressive victories over competitors from China, Kazakhstan, Georgia, and Egypt. However, Koppány’s bid for gold was halted by Russia’s reigning world and European champion Ali Ilyasov, who won the match 8–0.
Zalán Toplak, representing Ferencváros, claimed a bronze medal in the 77kg category. After entering the repechage rounds, Toplak showcased his skill by defeating Georgia’s Giorgi Gogelashvili with a decisive 10–2 victory, marking his first World Championship medal. His achievement added to Hungary’s medal tally and highlighted his potential in international competitions.
In another display of resilience and talent, Petro Zsitovoz secured a bronze medal in the 67kg category. Zsitovoz faced a challenging match against Egypt’s U23 world champion Mohamed Abdelrehim. Despite an early setback, he mounted a strong comeback to win the placement match 11–3, further contributing to Hungary’s success at the event.
The championships commenced with the Greco-Roman discipline, featuring eight Hungarian athletes as part of a 22-member delegation. Hungary’s performance in Bratislava underscored its strength in wrestling at the youth level, with the team’s achievements providing a promising outlook for the future. The medals won by Koppány, Toplak, and Zsitovoz highlight the nation’s competitive edge and dedication to excelling on the world stage.
