Hungary Fails to Secure Release of Frozen EU Funds, Says European Commission

by admin477351

The European Commission has dismissed assertions that Hungary has either secured or received billions in previously frozen European Union funds. Contrary to these claims, the Commission clarified that Hungary has yet to submit its official payment request under the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF). The deadline for Hungary to provide the necessary documentation is set for September 30, 2026.

Once Hungary submits the payment request, the European Commission will evaluate whether the nation has complied with the required reforms and achieved the “super milestones.” Since this request has not been filed, the review process is still pending, and there has been no confirmation that all conditions have been met for the release of funds.

Under the RRF guidelines, Hungary must demonstrate that it has successfully implemented the required reforms and investments. Only after the Commission reviews and accepts Hungary’s submission can any approved funds be disbursed. The Commission has stated that all payments that gain approval must be made by December 31, 2026. However, should there be issues with the documentation or if corrections are needed, the process could face delays.

The situation arose following statements from the TISZA government suggesting that Hungary had effectively secured the frozen EU funding. The European Commission’s response makes it clear that the funds have not been transferred yet and that a final assessment of Hungary’s compliance is still forthcoming.
