Hungary Airlines is navigating shifts in the European air cargo landscape, triggered by the recent imposition of a €3 customs duty on small shipments from July 1. This levy has significantly impacted e-commerce cargo volumes across the continent. Anticipating the change, retailers pushed a flurry of shipments in June, resulting in a subsequent dip in activity and prolonged processing times come July. While the market is showing signs of stabilization, the industry is also bracing for an additional €2 processing fee slated for November.
Amid these developments, Hungary Airlines had already planned maintenance for its leading freighter, the Airbus A330-243F, designated HA-LHU. However, delays in the global supply chain have protracted the aircraft’s C-check, now expected to conclude by mid-September. The airline anticipates the freighter will resume full operation by the month’s end. In response to the evolving market conditions, the airline is set to modify its route network, adjust cargo-handling procedures, and temporarily lower flight frequencies to optimize aircraft load factors.
In a significant fleet update, Hungary Airlines’ second aircraft, the Airbus A330-243P2F with registration HA-ZTO, is poised to exit the fleet following its owner’s decision to sell. Nonetheless, the airline remains committed to maintaining and potentially expanding its fleet size. It is actively exploring leasing and expansion opportunities to sustain its operational capacity.
Further diversifying its services, Hungary Airlines aims to venture into specialized cargo sectors starting the third quarter. This expansion includes entering the live-animal transportation market and catering to temperature-controlled cargo demands. The airline plans to leverage real-time monitoring technology to offer tailored services, tapping into higher-margin opportunities within these specialized markets.
