Hungarian President András Baka has raised concerns over a “crisis of trust” at the United Nations, calling for the global body to apply international law equitably to all nations. Speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York, Baka emphasized the necessity for the UN to maintain its capability to act effectively, ensure fair treatment of member states, and uphold consistent principles.
In his address, President Baka strongly condemned Russia’s actions in Ukraine, labeling the conflict a violation of the UN Charter. He reaffirmed Hungary’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. Baka stressed that diplomacy should be the path to resolving the conflict, but any peace agreement must respect Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Additionally, President Baka highlighted the importance of adhering to international humanitarian law in the Middle East. He urged for the safe and uninterrupted delivery of humanitarian aid to those in need. On the topic of migration, Baka stated Hungary’s commitment to combating irregular migration while ensuring the protection of human dignity and the rights of refugees.
The Hungarian leader’s remarks underline the need for the UN to uphold its foundational principles and address pressing global issues with impartiality and justice, reinforcing a commitment to international cooperation and legal frameworks.
