Greece has deepened its diplomatic activities at the United Nations General Assembly, with Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis engaging in significant discussions on regional security, maritime safety, and international cooperation. This move comes amid ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and efforts by Greece and Cyprus to enhance regional partnerships.

Key to Greece’s diplomatic efforts were trilateral talks with Cyprus, Jordan, and Egypt, as well as bilateral meetings with foreign ministers from India, Brazil, and Eritrea. Gerapetritis emphasized the importance of these discussions in the current geopolitical climate, marked by instability across the Middle East.

In collaboration with India, Greece co-hosted a high-level event focusing on artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, particularly their applications in shipping and maritime security. This initiative underscores Greece’s commitment to promoting freedom of navigation and protecting maritime routes, a priority for the nation given its significant role in global shipping.

Additionally, Greece participated in the inaugural meeting of the Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers, reinforcing its stance on the critical importance of ensuring safe and uninterrupted maritime trade.

Looking ahead, Greece is set to assume the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council in October. This will be its second presidency during its current two-year term. Gerapetritis noted that this period is likely to be pivotal, as the Council addresses armed conflicts and international crises, alongside the selection process for the next UN Secretary-General.

Beyond these engagements, Greece’s agenda at the General Assembly included discussions on various global issues such as the situation in Ukraine, developments in Sub-Saharan Africa, and efforts towards UN reform and strengthening multilateral cooperation.
