Germany is seeking to collaborate with Greece on a future submarine construction initiative, focusing on the modern Type 212 CD submarines. This proposal was discussed by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and his Greek counterpart, Nikos Dendias, during a meeting at the Crete Firing Range.
Pistorius emphasized the strength of the partnership between Germany and Greece, suggesting that the submarine construction could be undertaken in Greece. The Hellenic Navy’s submarine program is anticipated to be considered after 2030, with discussions about selecting new vessels likely to begin following Greece’s national elections in 2027.
Dendias reiterated Greece’s dedication to enhancing defense relations with Germany. This commitment includes joint military training, improved operational coordination, hosting German forces, and acquiring compatible military equipment.
The ministers also addressed ongoing cooperation involving Greek and German forces in the Kosovo Force (KFOR), pilot training initiatives in Kalamata, and Greece’s interest in acquiring IRIS-T SLS air defense missiles.
The discussions underscore both nations’ desire to expand their defense cooperation and explore opportunities for joint military production and training. These efforts reflect a broader strategy to strengthen military ties and enhance mutual defense capabilities.
