Slovak Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok has voiced concerns over what he perceives as the European Union’s inconsistent approach to assessing the rule of law in Hungary. During an appearance on Slovak television, Eštok highlighted that the EU has been notably quiet regarding recent political actions under Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar, actions that he believes would have previously attracted stronger EU criticism.
Eštok pointed to various controversial changes in Hungary, such as the ousting of the country’s president, amendments to the constitution, limitations imposed on parliament members, and modifications to the public broadcaster. He argued that had these changes been implemented by former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, the EU’s response would likely have been more severe, potentially involving sanctions.
In addition to Eštok’s remarks, Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár also expressed his apprehensions, particularly about constitutional changes that affect the presidency. Blanár contended that these changes do not align with the principles of the rule of law, raising questions about the EU’s stance on Hungary’s political trajectory.
The Slovak officials’ comments contribute to a broader dialogue concerning the EU’s approach to democratic and legal issues in Hungary. Eštok specifically criticized the European Commission for not scrutinizing recent developments in Hungary with the same intensity as it has in the past, suggesting a shift in the EU’s level of engagement with Hungarian political affairs.
