White House Gambles on High-Stakes Putin-Zelenskyy Summit

by admin477351

The White House is making a high-stakes diplomatic gamble, pushing for a swift summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to end the war. Officials announced Tuesday that planning for this pivotal meeting is in full swing, with President Trump’s administration taking the lead.
The basis for this push is a reported agreement from Putin, secured during a phone call with President Trump. According to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, Putin consented to meet Zelenskyy within two weeks. “The Trump administration is working with both Russia and Ukraine to make that bilateral happen as we speak,” she stated, highlighting the urgency of the effort.
However, this gamble is not without risks. Russia has not publicly committed to the two-week timeline. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s insistence on “utmost thoroughness” in preparation suggests Moscow may move at a slower pace. This divergence could complicate the U.S.-led initiative and temper initial optimism.
President Trump himself has acknowledged the uncertainty, admitting it’s possible Putin may not want a deal. For Ukraine, the stakes are immense. President Zelenskyy is preparing to negotiate directly with Putin over territory, while simultaneously working with partners on long-term security guarantees, for which the U.S. might provide air support.
