The European Council summit recently saw intense focus on Ukraine’s bid for EU membership, sanctions policies, and broader economic issues impacting the European Union, according to Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar. Discussions at the summit resulted in a final declaration on Ukraine that adhered strictly to language previously unanimously agreed upon by EU member states. However, a proposal to expedite Ukraine’s accession process was removed after consultations among the countries involved.
The debate over Ukraine’s path to EU membership continues to stir discussions within the bloc, with various nations expressing concerns about the speed of accession and its potential economic repercussions. This topic remains a point of contention among EU members as they navigate the complexities of expansion and integration.
During the summit, Prime Minister Magyar engaged in talks with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, addressing Hungary’s ongoing Article 7 procedure and other EU-related issues. Additionally, he met with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and participated in dialogues with leaders from the Visegrád Group, emphasizing Hungary’s role in regional cooperation.
Magyar underscored the significance of revitalizing collaboration among Central European nations within the Visegrád Group, affirming plans for future regional discussions to be hosted in Hungary. Meanwhile, EU leaders are also set to continue their negotiations concerning the bloc’s long-term budget framework for the years 2028 to 2034.
